I did a social year at AMOC/DHV, a ngo working with foreign drug users (meanwhile merged with the ngo De Regenboog, working with Dutch drug users) in Amsterdam from autumn 2001 until summer 2002. When I five years later, in 2007, studied photography and when we got the assignment to portray a subculture, it was just clear to me, that I would return there and follow some of the “clients” of AMOC/DHV. I actually failed during my study to put the photographs in a convincing order and also I hesitated a long time about publishing them, maybe because it feels like as if I adore myself with the suffering of others. In the end I decided to just arrange the pictures according to my original motivation of being curious. The photographs are presented in a chronological order starting with the different rooms of the institution AMOC/DHV, followed by pictures I have taken of W. from Austria on his boat, where he lived at that time. After that you`ll see pictures of W2. from Germany, already living since 30 years in Amsterdam, who I accompanied to the casino, where he plays the flute in order to earn money and later to a flat of a friend. The last pictures showing J. from Chech Republic at a squat, where he stayed in 2007.
